Slovenia – the homeland of the Carniolan bee

Darko Grm Queen Rearing

Darko Grm

An internationally acclaimed Carniolan queen breeding station.
Slovenia is the homeland of the Carniolan bee; the rearing of other bee races is thus prohibited by law, which enables buyers to purchase pure Carniolan queens.
Our Carniolan queen breeding station stands on a wooded plateau, 600 meters above sea level, in pristine surroundings in central Slovenia, a few dozen kilometers from Litija. Due to the cold climate, only the toughest Carniolan bee colonies survive the winter, which enables us to quickly achieve our breeding goals.
Our most important breeding goals are the following:
• High honey yield,
• Calmness of the bees on the comb and non-aggressiveness,
• Above-average resistance to disease,
• Excellent queen fertility and low swarming impulse.
Many positive comments from buyers of our queens throughout continental Europe, Great Britain, and the Middle East prove that we have succeeded in achieving our breeding goals. Our selection of bees is under the expert guidance and assessment of the Bee Department of the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia.
In addition to high honey yields, the main goal of our selective breeding is the bees’ calmness. Therefore our queens are suitable for keeping bees near towns and villages, and for foraging on both nectar and honeydew sources. They are known for using little food in the winter, developing quickly in the spring, producing large amounts of honey, resistance to diseases, and excellent comb-building. Timely spring expansion of the brood nest by adding comb foundations or empty combs to the brood chamber, where the queen lays eggs in them, ensures that there are few swarms.
We sell our queens at very competitive prices. We ship them from the beginning of May until the end of August by air or regular mail using special plastic queen mailing cages. These queen cages are suitable for both introducing queens into colonies as well as shipping them because they can easily survive up to a week in them. We recommend that you order your queens in time, preferably in spring, so that we can ship them to you by your deadline. Orders are taken in writing, over the phone, or by e-mail. All additional information is also provided. If you would like to receive your queens by airmail, we recommend that you order more than 50 at a time to save shipping costs.
The shipment of queens includes all necessary documentation confirming their perfect state of health.
